Children’s Awareness Month

Children’s Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about children’s challenges and promote their health, safety, and education. Children of all ages are vital to our communities, from the youngest babies to teenagers on the cusp of adulthood. During Children’s Awareness Month, we can come together as a society and work towards ensuring that all children have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Learn the significance of Children’s Awareness Month, why it matters, and how you can help. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or concerned citizen, we can all work together for a brighter future for our children.

History Of Children’s Awareness Month

The proclamation to designate June as a month dedicated to children was signed in 1996. It began as an initiative to honor children lost to violence and now includes initiatives to protect and celebrate the innocence of childhood.

Common threats to a child’s overall well-being include domestic violence, neglect, lack of educational opportunities, and food insecurity, especially during the developmental years.

Developmental childhood years (ages 3-5) are critical for a lifetime. During these years, children learn self-esteem and begin to cultivate emotional and physical health. Positive social interaction is part of creating an environment for children to learn, grow, and develop.

A solid foundation that embraces early education can empower children to learn essential psychological and emotional skills that assist them later in life. Children who have safe environments and access to early education are more likely to attend college and become higher earners.

Because children cannot advocate for their well-being, National Children’s Month is dedicated to providing and protecting the essential resources, care, and support for all children nationwide.

How To Celebrate The Kids In Your Life

There are many ways to participate in Children’s Awareness Month, including:

  • Becoming a volunteer
  • Working as a passionate advocate
  • Coordinating and participating in donation events
  • Providing thoughtful gifts to the children in your life

The opportunities for volunteering with children’s programs are vast and diverse. Some ideas for volunteering could include mentoring, tutoring, or checking with your local library branch to ask about upcoming children’s programs.

Volunteer To Make A Difference

Other ways to volunteer reach beyond hands-on activities with children and into community programs. Community volunteers play an integral role in creating and securing children’s futures.

Volunteering isn’t only for adults. Check out volunteer programs for kids to support this mission and make this a month for the whole family to participate together.

An estimated 1,840 children died from abuse or neglect in 2019. You can help any time of the year, especially National Children’s Month, by advocating for local programs that help underserved families. Other ways to advocate include supporting the programs and policies dedicated to protecting essential resources (like education) for kids. Reach out to local schools and childcare centers to find causes you can donate to for children in your community.

Finally, consider presenting thoughtful gifts to the children in your life for this month’s awareness. Young children have a fragile sense of self-esteem. Recognizing them with a small gift can greatly impact a child, teaching him or her that they are loved.
